There’s nothing like a good breakup song. And no matter what stage of your healing journey you are in, I’ve got a playlist for you. These are my top picks for the best breakup songs, curated over many years and broken into playlists depending on your mood of the day.
I discovered the power of music for healing from a broken heart during my divorce. I was filled with every “negative” emotion possible, one after another as the day dragged on. All I wanted to do is stay out late with whatever friends were available and then sleep the day away. But that wasn’t an option (at least not the sleeping the day away part). I had to work and figure out how to support myself and my new reality.
I was also still in total infatuation with my first iPod shuffle. She’d been a pretty good companion so far, so I decided to use her to help me get through the mornings that sometimes seemed impossible.
As a breakup coach and someone who has gone through multiple breakups since my divorce, I have created the following lists to help others get through each phase of the breakup stages of grief with the support of music. I hope they will help you.
Make sure to follow the lists you love the most as I update them regularly.
Do you have a song you’d like to suggest for any of my playlists? Please be in touch with me here or on IG.
Breakups: It’s Time to Kick Ass

And here is my original breakups playlist, dating alllllllll the way back to my divorce. It’s titled “It’s Time to Kick Ass” because that is the energy I was going for in the early days of my separation. I was struggling. And to be honest, I was pretty angry with how things had gone down with my husband before things imploded. I was working multiple jobs and the mornings were heavy. I put this playlist together to help me get out of bed, onto that subway, and into another long day of nanny work.

It really did wonders. I still have very vivid memories of walking through the crowded NYC subway corridors and feeling pretty fierce.
Some highlights:
“Fighter” by Christina Aguilera (one of the very first songs I added)
“Shout Out to My Ex” by Little Mix
“Wrong Song” by Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere
Breakups: You’re going to make it!

Breakups are so painful. So life-shattering. There are moments (and moments, and moments) when we think we will never be able to get through. There are moments where we lose sight of the fact that we have survived each of our hardest days in life and will survive this too.

Sometimes it is impossible to believe that we will ever get over it.
That is what this playlist is for. The weak moments when we need an inspiration injection. I hope these songs will help you to stay strong, have faith, and keep being intentional about your healing.
Some highlights:
“Daffodil Lament” by The Cranberries (my favorite breakup song of all time!)
“I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” by Whitney Houston
“Fight Song” by Rachel Platten
Breakups: It’s Okay to Grieve

Grieving is an important part of the healing journey. There are various ways that we can hold space for it, music is one of them.
I encourage you to be intentional with this playlist. Use it when you want to let some tears out. When you are on a road trip and want to sink into your feelings. When you are writing in your journal.

Most of all, I want you to know that the artists on this playlist grieved. Had broken hearts. Hurt. Healed and moved on. You can do it too.

“Right in Time” by Lucinda Williams
“Don’t Speak” by No Doubt
Breakups: Self-love

At some point, a lot of us turn the corner after a breakup and start to see our strength, the wonderful aspects of ourselves we were blinded to because of a bad relationship, discover new things about ourselves, and get a surge of love for the person that we are outside of the relationship.
